The avocado puffer (Auriglobus modestus), also known as the golden or bronze puffer, is a medium-sized, semi-aggressive freshwater pufferfish native to Southeast Asia’s slow-moving rivers. It grows up to 4 inches and thrives best in a spacious, well-filtered aquarium with at least 30 gallons per fish due to its territorial nature. Provide slightly soft to moderately hard water with a pH of 6.8–7.8 and temperatures between 75–82°F (24–28°C). This species requires a carnivorous diet of snails, shrimp, bloodworms, and other hard-shelled foods to prevent overgrown teeth. Tankmates are generally not recommended, as avocado puffers can nip or attack other fish. Regular water changes and plenty of hiding spots are essential for their health and comfort.
