Average Size: Typically grows up to 6-8 inches (15-20 cm) in length.

Tank Size: Requires a minimum tank size of 50 gallons, with ample space for swimming and hiding spots.

Temperament: Peaceful and generally gets along well with other community fish. However, it may become territorial with other bottom-dwellers or similarly-sized fish.

Unique Traits: Known for its beautiful, elongated, feathery dorsal fin, which gives it a graceful appearance. Its body is adorned with dark spots, and it has a slightly flattened head with barbels that help it navigate its environment.

Origin: Native to the river systems of West Africa, particularly the Niger River Basin.

Other Names: Also known as the Featherfin Squeaker, Featherfin Synodontis, or simply Featherfin.

Care Level: Easy to Moderate. While generally hardy, they require clean water and a well-maintained aquarium.

Diet: Omnivorous. Feeds on a variety of foods including sinking pellets, algae wafers, and fresh vegetables like zucchini or cucumber. They will also accept live or frozen foods such as bloodworms or brine shrimp.

Characteristics:

  • Nocturnal by nature, it tends to be more active during the evening and night hours.

  • Prefers a well-decorated tank with plenty of hiding spots, such as caves and driftwood.

  • Can produce sounds by grinding its pectoral fins against the shoulder girdle, a characteristic behavior of the Synodontis genus.

  • While generally peaceful, it may show aggression if kept with other bottom-dwelling catfish, so it’s important to monitor tank mates.

  • pH: 6.5-7.5

  • gH: 5-15

  • kH: 4-12

  • TDS: 100-300 ppm
