The Halfmoon male betta (Betta splendens) is a striking freshwater fish known for its large, fan-like tail that can spread 180 degrees, resembling a half-moon. These bettas thrive in warm, stable water temperatures between 76–82°F, with a pH range of 6.5–7.5 and soft to moderately hard water. While they are often sold in small containers, they require a minimum tank size of 5 gallons with a gentle filter and a heater, as they are tropical fish sensitive to temperature fluctuations. Halfmoon bettas are carnivores and need a high-protein diet, such as quality betta pellets supplemented with frozen or live foods like brine shrimp or bloodworms. They are territorial and aggressive toward other male bettas and should be housed alone or with peaceful, non-fin-nipping tank mates like Corydoras or snails. Their large tails are delicate and prone to tearing or fin rot, so avoid sharp decorations and keep the water clean with weekly water changes.
