The Horseface Loach (Acantopsis choirorhynchos) is an intriguing bottom-dwelling freshwater fish, known for its elongated snout and burrowing behavior. Native to Southeast Asia, including Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia, this fish inhabits sandy riverbeds and streams with slow to moderate water flow. Its slender, torpedo-shaped body is adorned with a mottled pattern of brown and beige, allowing it to blend seamlessly into its environment.
The Horseface Loach typically grows to an average size of 5-6 inches, with a maximum size of up to 8 inches. A tank size of at least 55 gallons is recommended, with a soft sand substrate to accommodate its natural burrowing instincts. This loach has a peaceful temperament, making it an excellent tankmate for other non-aggressive fish in a community setup.
Caring for the Horseface Loach is moderately challenging due to its specific habitat needs. It thrives in a well-oxygenated tank with a gentle current and plenty of hiding spots, such as driftwood, caves, and aquatic plants. This loach is primarily nocturnal and may take time to adjust to its environment. It feeds on a diet of sinking pellets, live or frozen foods like bloodworms and brine shrimp, and
occasionally scavenges for detritus in the substrate.
