The Pea Puffer, also known as the Dwarf Puffer, is a small, intelligent freshwater species native to India’s rivers and lakes. They thrive in well-planted aquariums with plenty of hiding spots and open swimming space. A single pea puffer needs at least 5 gallons, with 3–5 puffers requiring 15–20 gallons. They prefer slightly acidic to neutral water (pH 6.5–7.5), temperatures of 78–82°F (25–28°C), and stable, clean conditions. Pea puffers are carnivorous and should be fed live or frozen foods like bloodworms, daphnia, and snails rather than flakes or pellets. While they are small, they can be territorial, so keep them with care—ideally in species-only setups or with fast, non-finny tankmates. Regular snail feedings help prevent overgrown teeth and promote natural hunting behavior.
