The Rainbow Goby (Stiphodon elegans and related Stiphodon species) is a small, peaceful freshwater goby prized for its shimmering colors and active grazing behavior. Native to fast-flowing streams in Southeast Asia and Oceania, it requires an aquarium setup that mimics this environment with strong water movement, smooth rocks, and plenty of algae growth for grazing. They thrive in clean, oxygen-rich water with stable parameters, and should be kept in groups or with other peaceful tankmates. Rainbow Gobies are primarily herbivores that feed on algae and biofilm but also benefit from supplemental foods such as spirulina-based flakes, blanched vegetables, and occasional small protein sources. They are sensitive to poor water quality, so frequent maintenance is essential. While they do not breed easily in aquariums due to their amphidromous life cycle, they make a colorful and unique addition to well-maintained community tanks.
