The Red Flying Fox, also known as the Siamese Algae Eater, is a popular freshwater fish that is commonly found in aquariums. They are native to Southeast Asia, particularly Thailand and Malaysia. These fish are known for their vibrant red fins and black-striped body, making them a striking addition to any tank.

Red Flying Foxes are relatively small, growing up to about 6 inches in length. They are a peaceful and active fish that are well-suited for community tanks. However, they do have a tendency to be aggressive towards their own kind, so it's recommended to keep them in groups of 5 or more to diffuse any aggression.

Caring for Red Flying Foxes is relatively easy, making them a great option for both novice and experienced aquarists. They prefer a well-planted aquarium with plenty of hiding places, and a moderate water flow. A tank size of at least 30 gallons is recommended to ensure they have enough space to swim.

Red Flying Foxes are omnivores and will eat a variety of foods, including algae, shrimp pellets, and flakes. They are particularly effective at controlling algae growth in your tank. It is important to note that they can be sensitive to water quality, so regular water changes are necessary to maintain good water parameters.

Water Parameters:

  • pH: 6.5 - 7.5
  • Temperature: 75 - 80°F
  • Hardness: 5 - 12 dKH
  • Ammonia and Nitrite: 0 ppm
  • Nitrate: < 40 ppm

In summary, Red Flying Foxes are a stunning and active addition to any freshwater aquarium. They are easy to care for and are particularly effective at controlling algae growth. With proper care and attention, these fish can live up to 5 years in captivity.
