The Royal Clown Loach (Chromobotia macracanthus), commonly known as the Clown Loach, is a large, colorful freshwater fish prized for its striking black and orange bands and lively personality. Native to rivers and floodplains of Indonesia, these loaches thrive in spacious aquariums with soft substrate, hiding places such as caves and driftwood, and plenty of swimming space. They are highly social and should always be kept in groups of at least 5–6, where they form complex social hierarchies. Clown Loaches are omnivorous, feeding on sinking pellets, live and frozen foods like bloodworms and brine shrimp, as well as vegetable matter. Because they can reach over a foot in length, they require very large aquariums and long-term planning. With proper care, stable water parameters, and a group-oriented environment, they can become long-lived, interactive centerpiece fish in the home aquarium.
