The Saddled Bichir (Polypterus endlicheri), also known as the Endlicher's Bichir or simply the Saddle Bichir, is a fascinating, prehistoric-looking fish originating from freshwater habitats in Central and
West Africa. Renowned for its unique, armor-like scales and elongated body, this species features distinct "saddle" markings along its body, giving it its common name. T
he Saddled Bichir can grow impressively large, reaching an average size of 12-16 inches and a maximum size of up to 30 inches in optimal conditions, making it suitable only for spacious aquariums of at least 125 gallons.
This fish has a semi-aggressive temperament and is best housed with similarly sized tankmates, as smaller fish may be seen as prey. It is a nocturnal predator with a slow but deliberate nature, often observed cruising along the substrate. A standout trait of the Saddled Bichir is its ability to breathe atmospheric oxygen using a specialized lung-like organ, enabling it to survive in low-oxygen environments.
Caring for this species is moderately challenging due to its size, diet, and specific environmental needs. It thrives on a carnivorous diet of meaty foods, such as frozen or live shrimp, fish fillets, earthworms, and carnivore pellets. It also requires a tank setup with plenty of hiding spaces, soft substrate, and dim lighting to mimic its natural habitat.
