The Silver Diamond Angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare) is a striking freshwater fish known for its metallic silver sheen and graceful fins. Reaching up to 6 inches and living 8–12 years, they thrive in tall tanks of at least 30 gallons with stable, warm water between 76–82°F, a pH of 6.5–7.5, and soft to moderately hard water. These semi-aggressive, mid-to-upper swimmers prefer low-flow filtration and subdued lighting, with plenty of vertical swimming space and gentle plants. As omnivores, they need a varied diet of high-quality flakes or pellets, supplemented with live or frozen protein like brine shrimp and the occasional blanched vegetables. Suitable tank mates include peaceful species like Corydoras, mollies, swordtails, and larger tetras, while fin-nippers or tiny fish should be avoided. They can breed in captivity, forming monogamous pairs and laying eggs on flat surfaces, but often require a separate breeding tank for fry survival. Regular water changes, stable conditions, and careful monitoring for diseases like ich or fin rot are essential for keeping them healthy.
