The Wood Shrimp (Atyopsis moluccensis), also known as the Bamboo Shrimp or Singapore Flower Shrimp, is a large, peaceful freshwater shrimp prized for its unique filter-feeding behavior and striking coloration. Native to the fast-moving streams of Southeast Asia, this species thrives in well-oxygenated aquariums with plenty of hiding spots and surfaces to perch on.

A Name That Reflects Its Appearance

The "Wood Shrimp" name comes from its earthy brown, reddish, or tan coloration, which helps it blend into driftwood and natural environments. Some individuals may also develop lighter stripes along their body, adding to their camouflage.

Growth and Tank Requirements

Wood Shrimp are one of the largest freshwater shrimp, growing up to 3-4 inches in size. They require a minimum tank size of 20 gallons, though larger tanks (30+ gallons) are preferred due to their need for strong water flow and plenty of perching areas like driftwood, plants, and rocks.

Care and Water Parameters

Wood Shrimp thrive in clean, well-oxygenated water with a gentle yet steady current, with:

  • Temperature: 72-82°F
  • pH Range: 6.5-7.5
  • Water Hardness: Soft to moderately hard

A sponge filter or pre-filter on powerheads is recommended to prevent them from being sucked into strong filtration. Since they are sensitive to ammonia and nitrites, frequent water changes and stable water conditions are essential.

Diet and Feeding

Unlike scavenging shrimp, Wood Shrimp are filter feeders, meaning they use their fan-like appendages to catch floating food particles from the water column. Their diet should include:

  • Crushed fish flakes and micro pellets
  • Powdered or liquid invertebrate foods
  • Ground-up algae wafers
  • Natural microorganisms from a well-established tank

Since they depend on suspended food particles, tanks with gentle flow areas where they can perch and feed naturally are ideal. If food is scarce, spot-feeding powdered foods in their direction can help.

Unique Behaviors

Wood Shrimp are peaceful, non-aggressive creatures that prefer hiding during the day and feeding in the current at night. They often position themselves on driftwood or plants where the water flow is strongest, using their fan-like claws to catch food particles. If they turn pale or appear weak, they may not be getting enough food.

Important Considerations

Wood Shrimp cannot breed in freshwater, as their larvae require brackish water to develop. They should not be housed with aggressive fish that may pick at them, such as cichlids or large barbs. Providing multiple hiding spots will help them feel secure, especially during molting.
